LeADERS Program

The LeADERS program is a unique initiative designed to enhance the academic and professional development of students by offering them experiential learning opportunities that align with their career goals. The name "LeADERS" represents the six core areas of focus within the program:

  1. L – Leadership: Students engage in activities and courses that help them build leadership skills, fostering their ability to inspire and guide others in academic, professional, and community settings.

  2. A – Applied Work-Based Learning Experience: This pillar emphasizes hands-on, practical experiences in the workplace. Students gain valuable skills and insights by applying classroom knowledge in real-world professional environments.

  3. D – Diversity: LeADERS highlights the importance of understanding and appreciating diverse perspectives and cultures. Students develop skills to work effectively in multicultural environments.

  4. E – Entrepreneurship: Through entrepreneurial training and experiences, students are encouraged to think creatively, take risks, and develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

  5. R – Research: Students have the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research, working alongside faculty and peers to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their field of interest.

  6. S – Service: Community engagement and service-learning experiences are integral to the program, promoting civic responsibility and the importance of giving back to society.

  7. W– Writing: This pillar ensures students develop and refine their communication skills through structured writing assignments. Students are encouraged to reflect on their learning experiences, articulate their growth, and document achievements. Writing is emphasized as an essential tool for professional and academic success.

By participating in the LeADERS program, students can tailor their educational experience, earn a distinction on their transcript, and develop a portfolio of work that showcases their skills and experiences to future employers or graduate programs. The program is structured to help students make meaningful connections between their coursework, experiential learning, and career aspirations.

Active Discovery and Hands-On Learning

LeADERS emphasizes learning beyond traditional classroom settings. Through internships, research projects, and community engagement, students can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding and a richer academic experience.

Engagement and Collaboration

Collaboration is at the heart of LeADERS. The program encourages students to work closely with peers, faculty, and industry professionals, creating a network of support and learning. This engagement builds teamwork and communication skills essential for future careers.

Reflection and Personal Growth

Reflection is a core component of the LeADERS experience, promoting self-assessment and personal growth. Through reflective exercises and feedback, students develop a strong sense of self-awareness and a deeper understanding of their professional goals, values, and strengths.

Showcase and Career Preparation

LeADERS culminates in a showcase where students present their projects and experiences, providing a valuable platform to highlight skills, accomplishments, and growth to future employers. This feature of the program helps bridge the transition from academic learning to professional readiness.

LeADERS Personal Reflection

Participating in the LeADERS program has been a transformative experience that has significantly shaped both my academic and professional growth. I joined the program to strengthen my leadership skills and gain experiences that would prepare me for my future career. Throughout my time in the program, I have developed valuable skills in communication, critical thinking, and project management. One of the most impactful aspects was creating my ePortfolio, which pushed me to reflect deeply on my academic journey and articulate my goals with clarity and confidence. While presenting my work to peers and mentors was initially intimidating, it ultimately helped me build the confidence to share my achievements and skills effectively.

The program also broadened my perspective through its emphasis on diversity, research, and service. A memorable experience was working on a team research project that addressed public health disparities, which directly aligned with my interest in healthcare administration. Additionally, participating in community service, such as mentoring high school students, reminded me of the importance of giving back and inspired me to find ways to integrate service into my future career. These experiences not only helped me grow personally but also reinforced my passion for making a positive impact on others.

Overall, the LeADERS program has equipped me with tools to succeed academically and professionally while also encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone. It has shown me the value of reflection and intentional growth, which I plan to carry with me throughout my life. To anyone considering the program, I would encourage them to embrace every opportunity it offers. The journey may be challenging at times, but it is deeply rewarding and invaluable for personal and professional development.
