Applied Work-Based Learning Experience
Internship: HLSC 486

Lessons from Commonwealth Senior Living

My internship at Commonwealth Senior Living was a pivotal experience that aligned closely with the goals of the ODU LeADERS program. Through this internship, I gained hands-on experience in a healthcare setting, where I learned the importance of managing various aspects of senior living administration, from supporting residents and families to assisting with daily operations. This experience deepened my understanding of the healthcare field and how effective management practices impact both residents and staff. The internship connected seamlessly with the LeADERS program’s emphasis on leadership, real-world application, and service learning. Working directly in a senior living environment taught me how essential it is to be compassionate and adaptable while also staying organized and focused on quality care. I was able to apply classroom concepts to practical challenges, like understanding regulatory requirements and enhancing communication skills, which are crucial in healthcare settings. This experience not only solidified my commitment to a career in healthcare administration but also strengthened the leadership and interpersonal skills the LeADERS program seeks to cultivate.

Internship Presentation

As part of my internship class, I completed an assignment involving a PowerPoint presentation highlighting my comprehensive experience at Commonwealth Senior Living over 10 weeks. The presentation detailed a wide range of aspects of my internship, including my specific roles and responsibilities, learning outcomes, and significant experiences across various departments. By exploring these elements, I could reflect on my contributions and the skills I developed, from understanding the intricacies of daily operations to engaging in team-oriented projects and interacting with residents and staff alike. This assignment allowed me to delve deeply into how each department supports the overall mission of senior care and how various roles contribute to a high-quality living environment for residents.

Additionally, this project provided insight into senior living management's unique challenges and rewards, such as balancing compassionate care with operational efficiency, meeting regulatory requirements, and fostering a supportive community atmosphere. By organizing my experiences and reflecting on my growth, I gained a greater appreciation for the impact of hands-on experience in the healthcare field. This presentation helped me recognize the lasting value of practical exposure in senior living management, solidifying my commitment to making meaningful contributions to the field.
